Emily Watson gives the performance of a lifetime as Bess, a simpleton who often talks, out loud, to God. Bess falls head over heels for Jan (Skarsgård), an oily, lecherous oilman. Shortly after their wedding, Jan becomes paralyzed and tells Bess to engage in increasingly humiliating sex acts for his own inert titillation. When Bess is stabbed to death in a gangbang, Jan can, miraculously, walk again.
